Q:
When I use the Duet with my telephone, the microphone does not seem to be sensitive enough. While talking to others I can hear the caller very well, but the caller does not hear us adequately.
A:
In the older Duet Executive models the signal levels of the Duet's telephone connection were designed for an “average” telephone. This was based on dozens of telephone models that we’ve tried during the development phase of the Duet. Unfortunately, the sensitivity of some telephones is such that the Duet's output is too low. Unlike the computer connection (USB) there is no way to control the output level for the telephone.
An alternative solution is to purchase a Handset / Headset switchbox and connect the Duet to the telephone handset jack through this switchbox as described in the previous question. These converters typically provide a couple of sensitivity settings, one of which may work well with your telephone.
In the newer Duet Executive models, this problem was solved by providing the user with the option of controlling the level of output from the Duet to the telephone. Two switches located in the back panel of the Duet give the user four different volume settings. use the highest setting that does not cause an echo while using the device. For more information on how to adjust the telephone output settings of your Duet please refer to the user manual provided for this product.
Q:
Which one of your products is best suitable for a video conference in a room with about six people participating?
A:
Both the Solo and the Duet have a recommended range of about 10 feet, and both can work with external speakers to boost up the output volume. If a larger range is required we recommend that you gang two Duet Executive units together.
As of December 2007, Phoenix Audio is also offering the Quattro which is a device specially designed for larger conference rooms and has a range of about 20 feet.
Q:
When I use the Duet with VOIP the caller on the other side complains that there are breakouts in the communication. The audio input of my unit sounds “warbly”, how can I resolve this issue?
A:
The breakouts (or the "warbly sound") could be a communication issue through the application you are using. Try to record the Duet while speaking; you can use any recording software, even the Windows recorder (found under All Programs > Accessories > Entertainment > Sound Recorder). If the problem appears in the recording please call our tech support. If not it is probably a breakout in the communication.
Another way to test the unit is to use the testing utility that is available on our website. Go to this link: Resources, and download the testing utility found under "software tools". Please read the instructions before using it.
Q:
I encounter loud background noise while using your product. What can I do to reduce this problem?
A:
Loud background noises could be the result of low sensitivity in the computer's microphone input, bad communication, or a bad unit. Please make sure that the microphone level is set to a proper level (not too low). We recommend that you download the Audio Setup Utility available for free on our website, this usually solves most issues.
If the noise persists, try to record with the unit offline (to eliminate any issues relating to the communication link). You can use any recording software, even the Windows recorder (found under All Programs > Accessories > Entertainment > Sound Recorder). If the problem appears in the recording please call our tech support. If not it is probably a communication link issue.
